Did you know income tax was first introduced in the United States of America in 1861. A rate of three percent was levied on incomes above $800 per year and the resulting revenue was used to help fund the American Civil War effort. However, income tax was seen as unconstitutional and the law was repealed in 1872. The idea of a tax o…n personal income, at a rate of two percent, was reintroduced in the Revenue Act of 1894, but the legal status of this kind of tax was still unclear. In 1913, the “Sixteenth Amendment” to the Constitution of the United States was ratified. This cleared the way for the modern income tax system in the USA.

There are many ways to celebrate with green Earth Week Activi…ties! (1) Less is More – Purchase items with less packaging. (2) Go Chemical Free – Adopt a chemical free lifestyle. (3) Paperless Tablet PC – Unless you are a “committed luddite” – Invest in a slate/Tablet PC. (4) Green Energy – Advocate the use of sustainable, renewable, clean energy. (5) Recycling – Start a recycling program at your school, office, or workplace. (6) Green Transportation – Walk, ride or bike – Skip the car! (7) Plant a Tree or Garden – Green your environment with trees, gardens and flowers. (8)Turn off the lights – Turn off all unnecessary lights. Phantom Energy – Unplug Appliances to reduce the use of phantom energy. (9) Pick up the Garbage – Spend a couple hours picking up litter at your local park, river or highway.

Military Appreciation Event

Head on out to the 2012 SIC Slam: A Military Appreciation Event April 13th and 14th. The SIC SLAM is a two-day festival surrounding the Southern Indiana Classic Marathon, Half Marathon and 8k. The all-you-can-eat-and-drink event honors members of the military. On tap for fun: live entertainment, bierstube and five bouncy houses. 4-11 p.m. on Friday, 7:30 a.m. to 2:45 p.m. on Saturday. The event is being held at: 201 E. Boonville-New Harmony Rd

Relay for Life

Relay for Life of the Vanderburgh Colleges is being held on March 31st and April 1st. Cancer never sleeps, and neither do the volunteers at this overnight event. Team members take shifts to walk or run in celebration of cancer survivors, in memory of loved ones lost, and in support of efforts to fight the disease. The event kicks off at 6:00pm. Come out and show your support.
